Description
An account of the resource
At the time of this interview, Amite Dominick was the Vice-President of the Texas Prisons Air-Conditioning Advocates, and a former board member of Texas Cure. In July of 2021, Dominick became the president of TPAA, and the organization changed its name to the Texas Prisons Community Advocates. She has been advocating for the installation of air-conditioning in all Texas prisons since 2015. Detailing her experiences at the Texas legislature, Dominick dives into the realities of criminal justice advocacy and how conditions of confinement intersect with every other aspect of carceral life. Dominick’s work is one of ongoing effort, and she explains the exhaustion, the frustration, and the sacrifice of trying to change the laws creating fatal circumstances for so many, who physically cannot demand more from their state representatives. This interview was conducted by Murphy Anne Carter as part of the Sheltering Justice interview collection by Texas After Violence Project. Carter and Dominick spoke on June 1st, 2021 via Zoom.

Marina Roberts is a public-school teacher, union member, and community organizer living and working in Austin, Texas. During her interview, Marina discusses her work advocating for housing rights in Austin, Texas, specifically her campaign work to decriminalize houselessness in 2019, and her recent work fighting Proposition B, a ballot initiative passed in Austin on May 1st, 2021. Proposition B reinstated the camping ban that was repealed in 2019, making it a criminal offense to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas. This interview was conducted on June 23, 2021, in Garrison Hall on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Alvin Sanderson is an activist who advocates for the rights of unhoused individuals in Austin, Texas. In his interview he describes his fight against Proposition B, a ballot initiative passed in Austin on May 1st, 2021. Proposition B made it a criminal offense to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas. Alvin discusses how houselessness perpetuates cycles of harm and violence, and criminalizing houseless folk will only make matters worse. Alvin specifically points out how Prop B has led to the death of many unhoused folks and also pushes people into the woods, where violence and sexual violence often occur. When unhoused folks are faced with paying fines and potential incarceration or hiding in unsafe areas, there is no safety net and no safe option. Alvin advocates specifically for houseless women as he fears they are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, but speaks generally about his compassion towards folks who are facing circumstances similar to those in his past. As a formerly unhoused and formerly incarcerated individual, Alvin deeply understands the trials that many unhoused people in Austin face, and hopes that folks with more privileged backgrounds can come to show compassion as well.

<span>Jennifer Toon is a journalist, incarcerated rights advocate, and currently works as the Community Advocacy Manager at AVP. In a follow-up to her 2020 interview, Jennifer offers a personal perspective on how COVID-19 and Winter Storm Uri have affected the women incarcerated in Texas prisons. Jennifer speaks from her own experiences with the H1N1 pandemic inside Texas prisons, and the experiences she is hearing from her friends and loved ones who are still inside. Specifically, Jennifer speaks about the disparity between COVID-19 regulations and procedures when concerning the incarcerated women versus staff, visitors, and government officials. She states that the constant mistreatment and intimidation used by TDCJ and CO’s leads to a distrust for the government, which then impacts the women’s safety when it comes to vaccines and illness. Mostly, Jennifer is concerned for her loved ones still on the inside and their continued well being during COVID-19, vaccine rollouts, and Winter Storm Uri. Jennifer shares the story of CJ, a friend of hers who recently died of COVID-19 in the Mountainview Unit. Jennifer hopes that by sharing CJ’s story, policy regarding Texas prisons can change. This interview was conducted on March 9th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Jennifer Toon.</span>

<span>Casey Phillips is the founder of the Texas Prisons Air Conditioning Advocacy group. In this follow-up to her 2020 interview, Casey discusses the conditions of her husband’s unit post-lockdown. Casey’s husband has late stage renal failure and continues to face worsening conditions in Texas Prisons. She discusses the procedures and emotions she experienced getting to visit her husband for the first time post-lockdown and what she thinks the future of visitations will look like. She also speaks about the process for parole approval and the contradictory nature of program enrollment becoming required after submitting for parole. Casey expresses disappointment and anger at the way incarcerated folks are disregarded by the state and general public, and hopes her efforts to fight for better conditions and rights are met with successful policy measures.</span>

<span>Kirsten Ricketts is an incarcerated rights and re-entry advocate with a loved one on the inside. In this follow up to her 2020 interview, Kirsten speaks about the impacts of 2021 winter Storm Uri in Texas prisons. Specifically, she speaks about the living conditions that her husband and hundreds of others faced in wake of the storm. Kirsten also speaks on the introduction of House Bill 2793. If this bill were to pass, it would require that the parole panel provide actions that one can take if denied parole in order to be approved. Additionally, this bill calls for an individual programming and needs/risk assessment to be completed at 45 days after incarceration, instead of 120. Kirsten advocates for restorative justice, as she feels the mental, physical, and educational needs of incarcerated folk are not met, thus making it difficult to re-enter the free world. Kirsten also shares that folks at the Darrington Unit were able to get vaccinated due to an electric outage, and hopes people at other units can have the option to be vaccinated soon. <span>Maurice Chammah is a journalist and staff writer for The Marshall Project. In this late 2020 interview, Maurice discusses his work as a journalist exploring the overlap between the COVID pandemic and incarceration. He gives an overview of several of his pieces that have developed since the beginning of the pandemic. He mentions work on advocacy in small-town Texas, tracking medical conditions in jails and prisons across the country, executions during a time of quarantine, and more. Maurice reflects on how the pandemic is highlighting and exacerbating issues in the criminal justice system. This interview was conducted virtually by Murphy Anne Carter on November 10, 2020.</span>

David Johnson is an activist and community organizer in Austin, Texas. He currently serves as the Criminal Justice Organizer for Grassroots Leadership. In his interview, he discusses the impact of COVID-19 in prisons, specifically how prisons across this country are not set up to protect incarcerated people from illness. Related to this, Johnson speaks about his own incarceration and his support system, and how many incarcerated people lack friends and family members that seek to remind them of who they are. Johnson emphasizes the importance of community and organizing , especially during a crisis, and the grassroots movements that have grown during COVID-19. This interview was recorded on Zoom as a part of the Sheltering Justice documentation project and Dulab Radio.

Margarita (Maggie) Luna is a incarceration rights advocate and Hogg Foundation Peer Policy Fellow at the Texas Criminal Justice Coalition (TCJC). As a formerly incarcerated person, Maggie has acute knowledge of the neglect, abuse, and mistreatment incarcerated people are subjected to inside Texas prisons. In this interview, Maggie discusses her current advocacy work within her fellowship. She speaks about the various outreach and reform efforts relating to parole release during the COVID-19 shutdown and how they all went ignored by Governor Abbot. Maggie also discusses the vicious cycle of incarceration and recidivism. While still inside, Maggie met with a formerly incarcerated recovery coach that showed her that she could have a life in the free world. Maggie is continuing to fight for fair treatment in Texas prisons. This interview was conducted on November 3, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Gabriel Solis and narrator Margarita (Maggie) Luna.

In this follow-up to her June 8, 2020 interview, Lauren Bryd-Moreno shares updates on her advocacy efforts and her husband’s position within Texas prisons. Lauren has participated in numerous phone zaps, mail-ins, and rallies advocating for better TDCJ conditions, safety for those incarcerated during COVID-19, and releasing parole-eligible people. Despite the exhausting nature of the work, Lauren continues to fight for her husband’s and others’ rights to life and humanity while incarcerated. Lauren also provides updates on her husband, whom she feels is targeted with retaliation and censorship due to her advocacy work. Lauren also speaks about the individuals she knows through her advocacy work and their experiences with COVID-19, and generally her experiences with lockdown. She continues to work for a better future for her family and others. This interview took place via Zoom on October 7, 2020 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Lauren Bryd-Moreno.
