Lauren Bryd-Moreno began engaging in prison reform advocacy when her husband was incarcerated, and has increased her efforts with the onset of COVID-19. In this interview, she outlines the various areas of the prison system that she has learned about through her work. Her engagement with the world of advocacy has connected her to a wide array of people working on issues related to both incarceration as well as other types of state violence. The similarities between prison mistreatment and police brutality emphasize how broken the entire criminal legal system is. Lauren discusses the lack of treatment that incarcerated people are receiving in the face of COVID-19, and the protests she has helped organize in response to the mistreatment and mishandling of the pandemic in prisons. This interview was conducted via Zoom on June 8, 2020 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Lauren Bryd-Moreno.

<span>Lori Mellinger helps provide support for women recently released from prison. As a formerly incarcerated person herself, Lori knows the challenges faced by individuals re-entering free society. At the time of this interview, she had recently begun working at New Beginning, Big Country-- a transitional living community for recently released women in West Texas. In this interview, Lori talks about her job and the women she has worked with and how their parole and release schedules have been affected by COVID-19. Lori discusses the obstacles recently released individuals face when re-entering the free world– specifically lack of access to food and housing, government IDs, and other legal documents. Lori also references her own experience with incarceration, sharing viewpoints on what some of the specific needs are for women behind bars Additionally, she speaks about the difficulties raising public awareness for prison reform and incarceration rights, but feels encouraged by the strong community of women whom she works with. This interview was conducted on August 14th, 2020 via Zoom with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Lori Mellinger.</span>

Natalie Porteous’s fiance is currently incarcerated at a medical unit in south Texas. In this interview, Natalie discusses the neglect her fiance receives at the hands of TDCJ, specifically his experience with COVID. Her fiance is diabetic and when he tested positive for COVID, he was subsequently left alone for 12 hours, causing him to become hypoglycemic. He was then transferred to a gymnasium where he slept on the floor for 16 days. She goes on to explain the continued violations of human rights her fiance experienced through the revoking of food and denial of insulin, and sheer neglect of his physical state. She speaks about Kairos Ministries and the work both her and Justin do in their respective communities. Kairos, like many other organizations, have been affected by the COVID-19 shutdown, but are still showing up for their ministries however they can. She also describes how beneficial Texas Incarcerated Families Association (TIFA) has been, both for keeping informed of what is happening inside, as well as connecting her to advocacy efforts.This interview was conducted on August 26th, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Bryn Starbird, and narrator Natalie Porteous.

Sean Oliver, a mentor and religious leader, was released on parole during 2020. In this interview, Sean speaks about the difficulties coping with COVID-19 while incarcerated, specifically the contradicting stipulations that were placed upon the men seeking parole and the COVID-19 policies that denied them the classes necessary to achieve parole. Sean became a mentor and religious leader while still inside and finds that it is his life’s purpose to share his story and how his relationship with God has changed him. Sean also speaks about the difficulties of finding a job post-release and during COVID and how he seeks to change the world around him in any situation he is given. This interview was conducted on August 26, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Celeste Henery and narrator Sean Oliver.

Casey Phillips is a prison reform activist and the founder and president of Texas Prisons Air Conditioning Advocates. In her interview, Phillips speaks on her experience advocating for her incarcerated and chronically ill husband. Phillips describes the lack of treatment and care her husband receives, despite his pre-existing health conditions during a pandemic. She discusses the inhumane treatment of incarcerated people, such as lack of air conditioning in their units, lack of adequate healthcare, lack of quality food, and tampering of communication with loved ones, and the emotional toll the TDCJ inflicts on families and friends of incarcerated people. Savannah Eldrige is the founder of Be Frank 4 Justice, an organization that seeks to maintain family bonds, create positive outcomes, and advocate for incarcerated rights. Eldrige is also a co-founder of Coalition to Abolish Slavery-Texas (CAST) which is a partner of the Abolish Slavery National Network (ASNN). Both CAST and ASNN seek to abolish any legal premise of slavery that exists in national and state constitutions. Savannah is continually impacted by the carceral system, as both her brothers and her step-son are all incarcerated; she felt called to post-conviction work after the arrest and conviction of her brother, Frank. She began advocating for those on the inside who are often ignored by the media and the policy makers. In this interview, Savannah discusses the difficulties incarcerated folks have trying to re-enter the free world and the continual harm that the system perpetuates. Savannah also discusses the murder of George Floyd and how systemic racism impacts the black community and the continued racial disparity seen in US prisons. She highlights the importance of continuing to love, support, and care for loved ones on the inside because with that support and love, justice is possible. This interview was conducted on August 19th, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Celeste Henery and narrator Savannah Eldrige.

Kimberly Judd’s husband of 18 years is currently incarcerated in the Texas Prison system. In this interview, Kimberly describes the inhumane conditions incarcerated people are subjected to under the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Specifically, Kimberly speaks about her husband’s experience with starvation and unsafe living conditions in 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, in the Garza East and West Units and the Ferguson Unit. Kimberly recounts the abuse in every unit her husband has stayed in and discusses the gross abuses of power by guards, wardens, and the Texas government. She discusses the community she has found within the TDCJ unit support groups and how information sharing has increased her awareness of the injustice on the inside. This interview was conducted on July 6, 2020 on Zoom by interviewer Celeste Henery and narrator Kimberly Judd.

Jennifer Toon is a journalist from East Texas with 27 years of system involvement. She wrote for the state prison newspaper, The Echo, for over ten years, and as a freelance writer she has published work with The Texas Observer, The Marshall Project, and the Guardian. In this interview, Toon offers a personal perspective on how her lived experiences influence her current journalism and advocacy. She discusses how important it is for peer support to come from actual peers, highlighting the concept of “nothing for us without us.” The specific issues she touches on include nuances of the female experience behind bars, the familial community built during her years there, and the irreplaceable importance of maintaining connections to the outside while locked inside. Toon also outlines the most pressing objectives she hopes to highlight during COVID. She can speak directly to the ways that the virus has escalated injustices happening in prisons because of her close contact to many of those still incarcerated. (Line break) Despite the atrocities that she is regularly hearing and writing about, Toon offers the optimistic perspective that hardships can be shaped into tools to help self or others. In this interview, and throughout all her writings, Toon maintains positivity without denial of how severely problematic the system can be. An account of the resource
Kirsten Ricketts is an incarcerated rights advocate with a loved one on the inside. As a formerly incarcerated person herself, she deeply understands the abuse and injustices that incarcerated people face on the inside and in the free world. Using her previous experience, Kirsten created a transitional living facility for recently freed women where she helps them gain job experience all the while providing a safe space for them to re-enter society. In this interview, Kirsten speaks on her own personal calling to continue to advocate for just treatment inside Texas prisons, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Additionally, she speaks about her husband’s and her own experience in Texas prisons and the challenges she has faced with recidivism and the struggle to re-enter society. Kirsten finds hope in her Christian faith and working in prison ministries and urges free people to know and understand the injustices that incarcerated people face everyday. This interview was conducted on July 16, 2020 by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Kirsten Ricketts.

Raymon Pierce is a CNA whose husband– at the time of this interview– has been incarcerated for eight years. In efforts to create a space for TDCJ information sharing and a support group for those with loved ones on the inside, Raymon created the Texas Connected: TDCJ Friends and Family Facebook group. In this interview, Raymon explains the pain and frustration with TDCJ that led to the creation of Texas Connected in early 2020, and how he hopes it provides a power to those advocating for incarcerated loved ones. As a healthcare worker, Raymon talks about the unsafe conditions in Texas prisons in the wake of Covid-19. Additionally Raymon also discusses his experience getting married to his husband at the Smith Unit, and the emotional toll that separation and limited contact have on him. This interview took place on July 2, 2020 over zoom, with interviewer Murphy-Anne Carter and narrator Raymon Pierce.
