Alvin Sanderson is an activist who advocates for the rights of unhoused individuals in Austin, Texas. In his interview he describes his fight against Proposition B, a ballot initiative passed in Austin on May 1st, 2021. Proposition B made it a criminal offense to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas. Alvin discusses how houselessness perpetuates cycles of harm and violence, and criminalizing houseless folk will only make matters worse. Alvin specifically points out how Prop B has led to the death of many unhoused folks and also pushes people into the woods, where violence and sexual violence often occur. When unhoused folks are faced with paying fines and potential incarceration or hiding in unsafe areas, there is no safety net and no safe option. Alvin advocates specifically for houseless women as he fears they are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, but speaks generally about his compassion towards folks who are facing circumstances similar to those in his past. As a formerly unhoused and formerly incarcerated individual, Alvin deeply understands the trials that many unhoused people in Austin face, and hopes that folks with more privileged backgrounds can come to show compassion as well.

Description
An account of the resource
At the time of this interview, Amite Dominick was the Vice-President of the Texas Prisons Air-Conditioning Advocates, and a former board member of Texas Cure. In July of 2021, Dominick became the president of TPAA, and the organization changed its name to the Texas Prisons Community Advocates. She has been advocating for the installation of air-conditioning in all Texas prisons since 2015. Detailing her experiences at the Texas legislature, Dominick dives into the realities of criminal justice advocacy and how conditions of confinement intersect with every other aspect of carceral life. Dominick’s work is one of ongoing effort, and she explains the exhaustion, the frustration, and the sacrifice of trying to change the laws creating fatal circumstances for so many, who physically cannot demand more from their state representatives. This interview was conducted by Murphy Anne Carter as part of the Sheltering Justice interview collection by Texas After Violence Project. Carter and Dominick spoke on June 1st, 2021 via Zoom.

Andrea McCutcheon’s fiance has been incarcerated since May of 2018. In this interview, Andrea discusses the difficulties her fiance has endured as an immunocompromised individual during COVID-19 and the neglect he faces in Texas prisons. Through consistent engagement with advocacy groups, social support networks, and –when possible– her loved one, Andrea is able to provide information on current situations involving programming, housing, and health protocols happening on the inside. She is one of many who deal with the extra frustration of having a loved one who is still inside despite having been found eligible for parole. Andrea speaks about her journey into advocacy and political action regarding conditions in Texas prisons. She is also involved in Texas Air-Conditioning Advocate and Texas Cares. She further discusses her fear of her fiance becoming infected with COVID-19 and losing his place in line for release. This interview was recorded on June 6, 2020 via Zoom with interviewer Murphy Anne-Carter and narrator Andrea McCutcheon.

Casey Phillips is a prison reform activist and the founder and president of Texas Prisons Air Conditioning Advocates. In her interview, Phillips speaks on her experience advocating for her incarcerated and chronically ill husband. Phillips describes the lack of treatment and care her husband receives, despite his pre-existing health conditions during a pandemic. She discusses the inhumane treatment of incarcerated people, such as lack of air conditioning in their units, lack of adequate healthcare, lack of quality food, and tampering of communication with loved ones, and the emotional toll the TDCJ inflicts on families and friends of incarcerated people. This interview was conducted on August 27, 2020 via Zoom with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Casey Phillips.

<span>Casey Phillips is the founder of the Texas Prisons Air Conditioning Advocacy group. In this follow-up to her 2020 interview, Casey discusses the conditions of her husband’s unit post-lockdown. Casey’s husband has late stage renal failure and continues to face worsening conditions in Texas Prisons. She discusses the procedures and emotions she experienced getting to visit her husband for the first time post-lockdown and what she thinks the future of visitations will look like. She also speaks about the process for parole approval and the contradictory nature of program enrollment becoming required after submitting for parole. Casey expresses disappointment and anger at the way incarcerated folks are disregarded by the state and general public, and hopes her efforts to fight for better conditions and rights are met with successful policy measures.</span>

David Johnson is an activist and community organizer in Austin, Texas. He currently serves as the Criminal Justice Organizer for Grassroots Leadership. In his interview, he discusses the impact of COVID-19 in prisons, specifically how prisons across this country are not set up to protect incarcerated people from illness. Related to this, Johnson speaks about his own incarceration and his support system, and how many incarcerated people lack friends and family members that seek to remind them of who they are. Johnson emphasizes the importance of community and organizing , especially during a crisis, and the grassroots movements that have grown during COVID-19. Jennifer Toon is a journalist from East Texas with 27 years of system involvement. She wrote for the state prison newspaper, The Echo, for over ten years, and as a freelance writer she has published work with The Texas Observer, The Marshall Project, and the Guardian. In this interview, Toon offers a personal perspective on how her lived experiences influence her current journalism and advocacy. She discusses how important it is for peer support to come from actual peers, highlighting the concept of “nothing for us without us.” The specific issues she touches on include nuances of the female experience behind bars, the familial community built during her years there, and the irreplaceable importance of maintaining connections to the outside while locked inside. Toon also outlines the most pressing objectives she hopes to highlight during COVID. She can speak directly to the ways that the virus has escalated injustices happening in prisons because of her close contact to many of those still incarcerated. (Line break) Despite the atrocities that she is regularly hearing and writing about, Toon offers the optimistic perspective that hardships can be shaped into tools to help self or others. In this interview, and throughout all her writings, Toon maintains positivity without denial of how severely problematic the system can be. <span>Jennifer Toon is a journalist, incarcerated rights advocate, and currently works as the Community Advocacy Manager at AVP. In a follow-up to her 2020 interview, Jennifer offers a personal perspective on how COVID-19 and Winter Storm Uri have affected the women incarcerated in Texas prisons. Jennifer speaks from her own experiences with the H1N1 pandemic inside Texas prisons, and the experiences she is hearing from her friends and loved ones who are still inside. Specifically, Jennifer speaks about the disparity between COVID-19 regulations and procedures when concerning the incarcerated women versus staff, visitors, and government officials. She states that the constant mistreatment and intimidation used by TDCJ and CO’s leads to a distrust for the government, which then impacts the women’s safety when it comes to vaccines and illness. Mostly, Jennifer is concerned for her loved ones still on the inside and their continued well being during COVID-19, vaccine rollouts, and Winter Storm Uri. Jennifer shares the story of CJ, a friend of hers who recently died of COVID-19 in the Mountainview Unit. Jennifer hopes that by sharing CJ’s story, policy regarding Texas prisons can change. This interview was conducted on March 9th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Jennifer Toon.</span>

Description
An account of the resource
Jorge Antonio Renaud is a writer, poet, and activist. In this interview, he discusses the intersections of abolition, incarceral justice activism, COVID-19, police brutality, and immigration policies. Through this discussion, it is clear that all of these things impact one another and were built to boost white supremacy. Jorge speaks about how activism has changed since he began after his release from incarceration decades ago and how language around incarceration has also progressed. Specifically, he discusses how incarceration breeds violence and cycles of harm and injustice, and how the idea of "innocence" harms people currently incarcerated. Jorge muses on what the abolition movement and justice movement will look like in the future and hopes that people will continue to physically do the work that needs to be done. This interview was conducted via Zoom on November 6, 2020 with interviewer Gabriel Solis and narrator Jorge Antonio Renaud.

<span>Kambri Crews was raised in rural Texas by deaf parents with few resources. Crew's book, </span><em>Burn Down The Ground: A Memoir</em><span>, reflects on the experience of living with disabled parents who carry their own traumas. In telling her own story, she also explores the past of her alcoholic and abusive father who eventually ended up in a Texas prison for the attempted murder of his partner. Here, Crews talks to TAVP about what has happened in the 8 years since her book was published. She also speaks upon the fear of police within the deaf community due to deaf/hearing misunderstandings that often lead to brutality at the hands of the police.She reflects on her father's experience as a deaf man in a prison system that is unable or unwilling to accommodate him– despite a ravaging pandemic and continuing health problems. She talks specifically about his struggles with health while inside, including his reluctance to seek any medical treatment because of a distrust for the prison medical system. In July 2020, Crews's father passed away from terminal cancer.</span>
