Interview with Pamela Watts

On June 10th, 2020, Pamela Watts and her partner Jennifer Miller were t-boned in Lockhart, Texas by off-duty San Marcos Police Sergeant Ryan Hartman. Watts was airlifted off the scene with multiple injuries, and Miller died while still trapped in the vehicle. Hartman had an open can of Dos Equis beer in his car but refused a blood alcohol test. A blood test administered several hours later after a warrant was issued came back negative for alcohol. Lockhart Police Department investigated the crash and recommended charges of negligent homicide. The Caldwell County District Attorney recused himself due personal connections to Hartman, and the Bastrop County District Attorney Bryan Goertz, who took over the case, presented charges of distracted driving to a Grand Jury. The case did not go to trial. Since the accident, Watts has called for Hartman to step down from his position as an officer with SMPD, and vocally opposed the decisions of the Bastrop County District Attorney. In this interview, Watts discusses the night of the wreck and her activism to find justice for Jennifer Miller’s death. She outlines the actions and responses of various individuals involved in the case, and once again calls for Ryan Hartman to leave the police force. Pamela Watts was interviewed by Amy Kamp for Texas After Violence Project on July 19th, 2021, in the offices of Mano Amiga in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas.

Cluren Williams is a 4th generation Austinite, author, and activist. In this interview, Cluren discusses the deep roots of racism and classism in the US and Austin, and how he got involved with community organizing and advocacy. He is particularly troubled by the amount of violence that the Black community faces everyday; he seeks to be a voice of unity and peace. He shares how the socioeconomic changes in Austin have displaced much of the East Austin Black community and how the Austin Police Department (APD), gentrification, and corporations have made Austin a playground for the wealthy. Cluren also discusses his brother’s assault at the hands of the APD and his subsequent incarceration. He shares the low quality of care his brother received in the hospital and how his family was barred from visiting him. Ultimately, Cluren speaks on the stark injustice and systemic racism that affects the Black community everyday. He will continue to advocate for his community and all other marginalized communities in hopes that we can see each other as equal humans, all deserving of love, respect, and dignity. This interview was recorded on July 14th, 2021 by interviewers Jane Field and Amy Kamp and narrator Cluren Williams.

Tandera Louie is a community organizer and preschool teacher in East Austin. In this interview, Tandera speaks about the unequal treatment of houseless folks in Austin as well as the wealth and resource gap that continues to grow due to capital investors and capital-produced gentrification. As a community organizer with Austin DSA, she often helps with canvassing initiatives. Although she finds canvassing essential work, she often faces anxiety and fear as a black woman approaching the homes of strangers in a highly segregated city. Tandera speaks about her personal abolition beliefs and reimagined versions of society sans state violence and surveillance. As she continues to fight for a just and caring community, she makes sure she has time to spend in nature as well as indulge in what brings her joy. This interview was recorded via Zoom on August 9, 2021 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Tandera Louie.

Bob Libal is a community organizer and civil rights activist living in Austin, Texas. Currently, he is the Senior Campaign Strategist at The Sentencing Project. Bob began contributing to Austin community organizing when he began studies at UT in 1999. In this interview, he explains how organizing and activism has changed over the years but civil rights for incarcerated people, immigrants, and marginalized communities still require work and progress. Bob has also worked with Grassroots Leadership in student organizing, immigration rights organizing, and criminal justice reform. He speaks specifically about each of those movements and what abolition and community safety means to him. Additionally, Bob discusses his work organizing against Prop B in Austin and how its passing affects communities most affected by state violence. As a person with white, male, and educational privilege, Bob speaks on the strategies he implements to use his privilege to the advantage of the organizing’s purpose. This interview was conducted on July 1, 2021 by interviewers Murphy Anne Carter and Jane Fields and narrator Bob Libal.

Interview with Kambri Crews, Pt. 2
Description

Kambri Crews is an author, comedian, and incarcerated rights advocate from East Texas. In this follow-up to her 2020 interview, Kambri discusses her father’s death in incarceration in 2020 and her battle with TDCJ. Kambri’s father passed shortly after her 2020 interview after being diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 lung cancer. Kambri spent the better part of 2020 and the years prior unabatingly requesting TDCJ to take better care of her father’s ailing health. Kambri’s community rallied around her when TDCJ would not release her father’s dental records, with enough pressure, TDCJ finally succumbed to her request. Kambri discusses the bureaucratic obstacles that prevent loved ones from accessing medical records and requesting medical help for those on the inside. Her father suffered from severe dental decay and severe health problems, in addition to being deaf, and was neglected at every level of the carceral system. Kambri hopes that by sharing her experience, she is able to continue to help and advocate for other families experiencing similar circumstances. This interview was recorded via Zoom on June 29th, 2021 with interviewer Bryn Starbird and narrator Kambri Crews.

At the time of this interview, João Paulo (JP) Connolly was the Organizing Director of the Austin Justice Coalition. In this role JP has helped the greater Ausftin community to fight against extreme policing and police violence, housing and displacement— specfically against Prop B— and cretaing a safer community for all. JP believes that we can and should reiamgine our communities as inclusive and sacred spaces where neighbors support each other and housing is a right, not a siginifer of wealth. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of community organizing and community building and seeks a future where communities are the foundation fro people’s safety and well-being, not government entities and white hegemonic political structure. In this interview, JP discusses the reprecussions of the passing of Prop B and how rapid gentrification in Austin is leading to community displacement— specifically impacting Austin’s communities of color and historic black neighborhoods. JP speaks about AJC’s start working with BLM protests to work against police brutality, and how they have shifted to also focus on Austin’s housing crisis and insufficient resources for mental health and addiction. Although the work is hard and often discouraging, JP maintains hope that a better future can await us if we start relying on each other.

Sam Benavides is a recent college graduate of Texas State University, where she earned her degree in Public Administration and Political Communication. She is from Laredo, Texas, and currently works as a Campaign Fellow with Mano Amiga in San Marcos, Texas, where she focuses on communications as well as centering the voices of directly impacted individuals in legal reform advocacy efforts. She previously worked with MOVE Texas, a statewide nonpartisan nonprofit organization that works to build power in underrepresented youth communities. It was through her work with MOVE that she met the Mano Amiga team, and formally joined the organization in the summer of 2020.
Eric Martinez is the Policy Director for Mano Amiga. Eric’s political evolution began in libertarian anarchist circles and drifted towards employment in right-wing research think tanks, where he focused on local governance issues fighting against developers. He gladly left that life behind, over what he saw as inconsistent application of anti-violence principles on matters of immigration and the criminal legal system. and has since developed profoundly and rapidly, earning him an invitation to work directly for the county’s top elected official, a progressive democrat and fellow college dropout, the Hays County Judge, where Eric helped lead a criminal legal system assessment identifying the cost of the local jail had risen 7000% in 5 years.
He then left to lead Mano Amiga full time, where along with the team, he successfully advocated for the state's of Texas's only Cite & Release Ordinance, brought a revolving community bail fund to Hays County: The Bail Project, and advocated for $5 million in ARP funding to go towards establishing a public defender's office.
Based in San Marcos, Mano Amiga was formed out of a need to organize and campaign against the detainment and deportation of undocumented people in the US. Today, Mano Amiga has expanded their goals to advocate for criminal justice policy reform in Hays and Caldwell Counties.

This interview contains descriptions of sexual assault.
Sarah Marloff is an award winning journalist and Arts Editor for the Washington City Paper. Sarah reports mostly on LGBTQ+ rights and culture, arts and culture in DC, and the criminalization and impacts of sexual abuse. In this interview, Sarah speaks to her former editor at the Austin Chronoicle, Amy Kamp, and Murphy Anne Carter about reporting on sexual abuse and the how it’s addressed by the US criminalization system. Sarah speaks about the various stereotypes that are perpetuated regarding what a survivor and a sexual perpetrator looks like. She discusses how survivors are often excluded from this narrative due to their gender, race, or sexual orientation. She also speaks about the normalization or rape and sexual assault from graphic media portrayals as well as the laborious process of taking assault to trial. Sarah shares the continued trauma of assault from medical rape kits and the lack of community and legal support for survivors when they do not meet the aforementioned stereotypes. Sarah hopes that we can reimagine how rape and sex are discussed in a way that can foster healing for survivors, without necessarily involving the injustices of the carceral system.

Karen Munoz is the co-founder of Mano Amiga, a Central Texas organization that focuses on immigration and incarceration rights and reform. In this interview, Karen discusses the importance of organizing at a community level and the impact of municipal government. As the co-founder of Mano Amiga, Karen noticed a lack of resources for immigrants along the I-35 corridor, specifically the lack of an immigration rights attorney. She created Mano Amiga in hopes of providing the resources., framework, and tools for individuals vulnerable to injustice at the hands of the state. Her framework is rooted in abolition as she seeks to provide tools for folks targeted by mass incarceration and ICE through racist and classist systems. Karen began in this work through violence prevention work at a domestic violence organization. She has worked for organizations such as Latino Justice and Just Futures Law. Currently, Karen is pursuing a law degree to continue her work in immigration rights and defense. This interview was conducted on May 24, 2021 via Zoom by interviewers Celeste Henery and Brooke Jones and narrator Karen Munoz

Alycia Welch is the Associate Director of the Prison and Jails Innovation Lab at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin. In this interview, Alycia speaks about her work to dismantle the gender gap behind bars. Alycia works to create policy and reform for women in Texas prisons because their needs are often ignored and neglected by TDCJ and the state. Alycia speaks about the types of reform she is hoping to see in Texas prisons, revolving around women’s access to their children, improvements to education/programs, leadership changes, and environmental changes. Alycia also speaks to the societal conditions that often push women into state violence and the carceral system, and ultimately, the hardship women face because of their gender. This interview was conducted on May 13th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Bryn Starbird and narrator Alycia Welch.
