On April 26, 2020, at the age of 69, he tragically passed away from complications from COVID-19. He is survived by his childhood friends, including Nancy Watson and Rick Hughes. In a phone call, Nancy shared warm memories of Steve.

Steve was known as the “Cat Man” to others incarcerated at Sumter Correctional Institution in Florida because he befriended any feline who came his way. He had a cat he called “Smokey Joe,” whom he trained and fed with his personal supply of food–a supply that was meager to begin with. Whenever the cafeteria gave Steve sardines, he shared them with his cat. Eventually, Smokey Joe was taken away, and Steve was heartbroken."

To read Stephen's memorial in full, please visit Mourning Our Losses.
</text>

Mr. Coley passed away on May 2, 2020 at Cummins Unit state prison after a short battle with COVID 19.

Derick's untimely death has left his loved ones with an incalculable loss. Those left to mourn his passing include his daughter - Adaisyah, his sisters - Tytiuana Harris and Shatasha Harris, and his longtime girlfriend - Cecelia Tate. Derick was a loving and devoted father, son, brother, companion, and friend. He took great joy in being a part of his daughter's life, and was a source of great strength and encouragement for his sisters. Derick's youngest sister, Tytiuana Harris, finds solace in remembering that “My older brother was my best friend, my everything.” Tytiuana recalled “When I need to talk, when I need to cry, he was there.” For many, the greatest memento of Derick's life will be the formidable, yet gentle impression he left on each person he met. He will be missed everyday as those that loved him reflect on all of the great memories he left behind."

To read Derick's full memorial, please visit Mourning Our Losses.

Daniel Lewis Lee was executed on July 14th in Terre Haute, Indiana. His killing was the first federal execution in seventeen years, and the first of four planned for this summer. Born on January 13, 1973, in Yukon, Oklahoma, Daniel was just 47 years old. We mourn his death and the conditions in which he died.

Daniel’s execution was a site of intense controversy over the past few months, as the coronavirus made it difficult for his lawyers to work on his case. For three months, leading up until the week before his execution, Daniel did not see his lawyers and could not have confidential conversations with them. Furthermore, his lawyers were unable to conduct investigations or have face-to-face interviews with witnesses."

To read Daniel's full memorial, please visit Mourning Our Losses.
</text>

                <text>Kirsten Ricketts is an incarcerated rights and re-entry advocate with a loved one on the inside. In this follow up to her 2020 interview, Kirsten speaks about the impacts of 2021 winter Storm Uri in Texas prisons. Specifically, she speaks about the living conditions that her husband and hundreds of others faced in wake of the storm. Kirsten also speaks on the introduction of House Bill 2793. If this bill were to pass, it would require that the parole panel provide actions that one can take if denied parole in order to be approved. Additionally, this bill calls for an individual programming and needs/risk assessment to be completed at 45 days after incarceration, instead of 120. Kirsten advocates for restorative justice, as she feels the mental, physical, and educational needs of incarcerated folk are not met, thus making it difficult to re-enter the free world. Kirsten also shares that folks at the Darrington Unit were able to get vaccinated due to an electric outage, and hopes people at other units can have the option to be vaccinated soon. This interview was conducted via Zoom on March 4th, 2021 by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Kirsten Ricketts.</text>

                <text>This portrait drawing of Pedro Arias was created by Mourning Our Losses volunteer EJ Joyner to accompany Pedro's memorial, which reads in part:

"Pedro Arias—or, as his friends called him, Pete—was born in 1963. He grew up with his mother, Adeline Rodriguez, and a few siblings. His home environment, however, was not conducive to a safe and healthy childhood, and those familiar with Pete’s upbringing describe it as harsh and troublesome. Pete was incarcerated at San Quentin Prison in California and survived 30 years on Death Row. He remained close with Delores Garcia, a friend since childhood, who had a daughter of her own; at the time of Pete’s incarceration, he and Delores were planning to get married. Delores recalls how Pete sent her daughter letters from jail. At the time, Delores’s mother, Marie Alvarado, echoed these sentiments, testifying that Pete “had always been respectful to her, always called her ‘mom,’” expressed remorse for his actions, and “wrote to her from jail when she was in the hospital with pneumonia. . . . On August 9, 2020, Pete succumbed to the coronavirus and passed away at an outside hospital. He was barely 58 years old."

To read Pedro's memorial in full, please visit Mourning Our Losses.</text>
