Lauren Bryd-Moreno began engaging in prison reform advocacy when her husband was incarcerated, and has increased her efforts with the onset of COVID-19. In this interview, she outlines the various areas of the prison system that she has learned about through her work. Her engagement with the world of advocacy has connected her to a wide array of people working on issues related to both incarceration as well as other types of state violence. The similarities between prison mistreatment and police brutality emphasize how broken the entire criminal legal system is. Lauren discusses the lack of treatment that incarcerated people are receiving in the face of COVID-19, and the protests she has helped organize in response to the mistreatment and mishandling of the pandemic in prisons. This interview was conducted via Zoom on June 8, 2020 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Lauren Bryd-Moreno.

In this follow-up to her June 8, 2020 interview, Lauren Bryd-Moreno shares updates on her advocacy efforts and her husband’s position within Texas prisons. Lauren has participated in numerous phone zaps, mail-ins, and rallies advocating for better TDCJ conditions, safety for those incarcerated during COVID-19, and releasing parole-eligible people. Despite the exhausting nature of the work, Lauren continues to fight for her husband’s and others’ rights to life and humanity while incarcerated. Lauren also provides updates on her husband, whom she feels is targeted with retaliation and censorship due to her advocacy work. Lauren also speaks about the individuals she knows through her advocacy work and their experiences with COVID-19, and generally her experiences with lockdown. She continues to work for a better future for her family and others. This interview took place via Zoom on October 7, 2020 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Lauren Bryd-Moreno.

Description
An account of the resource
Linda Louden is a prison reform activist, whose son [at the time of this interview] has been incarcerated for seven years. She has become a voice for incarcerated rights, speaking out on issues concerning the sometimes-fatal lack of air conditioning in prisons, abuse or negligence by the guards, and other inhumane treatment happening inside. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Louden called out TDCJ for their lack of transparency surrounding COVID numbers, deaths, and protocol. Because of her actions and vocal calls for justice, Louden has been removed from her son’s visitor list. Her advocacy has also led to explicit repercussions for her incarcerated son, including the delay of his parole. Louden speaks to some of the ways she has found support during these difficult years, through her faith and church, while emphasizing the importance of continuing to fight for those whose voices have been taken away from them. This interview was conducted virtually by Murphy Anne Carter on June 1, 2020.

<span>Lori Mellinger helps provide support for women recently released from prison. As a formerly incarcerated person herself, Lori knows the challenges faced by individuals re-entering free society. At the time of this interview, she had recently begun working at New Beginning, Big Country-- a transitional living community for recently released women in West Texas. In this interview, Lori talks about her job and the women she has worked with and how their parole and release schedules have been affected by COVID-19. Lori discusses the obstacles recently released individuals face when re-entering the free world– specifically lack of access to food and housing, government IDs, and other legal documents. <span>Lovinah Igbani-Perkins is a prison reform activist and student of social work at the University of Houston. As a formerly incarcerated person with a loved one still on the inside, Lovinah sees it as her duty to fight for TDCJ reforms, such as air conditioning, COVID-19 protocol, adequate and nutritious meals. On May 23, 2020, Lovinah helped organize a protest to demand that TDCJ improve conditions in Texas prisons in light of COVID-19. In this interview, Lovinah speaks about community action, her job as a drug and alcohol counselor, her future prospects as a social worker, and discovering her calling for prison activism and mental health activism. Lovinah discusses how proud she is of her community rallying together, but how there is still work to be done. This interview was conducted via zoom on May 25, 2020 by interviewer, Murphy Anne Carter, and narrator, Lovinah Igbani.</span>
