As a formerly incarcerated person, Maggie has acute knowledge of the neglect, abuse, and mistreatment incarcerated people are subjected to inside Texas prisons. In this interview, Maggie discusses her current advocacy work within her fellowship. She speaks about the various outreach and reform efforts relating to parole release during the COVID-19 shutdown and how they all went ignored by Governor Abbot. Maggie also discusses the vicious cycle of incarceration and recidivism. While still inside, Maggie met with a formerly incarcerated recovery coach that showed her that she could have a life in the free world. Maggie is continuing to fight for fair treatment in Texas prisons. This interview was conducted on November 3, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Gabriel Solis and narrator Margarita (Maggie) Luna.</text>

In this interview, Micaela describes how her identity as a Latina, her focus of study in social work, and a call to action inspired by the works of Ava DuVernay, Patrisse Cullors, and Angela Davis, have guided her current work in advocacy and restorative justice.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Micaela discusses how Ava DuVernay’s work left a lasting impact on how she understood the criminal justice system and its role in criminalization of Black and Latino communities. Micaela discusses her advocacy work with the Bail Project Hotline in the midst of COVID 19, as well as the general atmosphere of working in advocacy during a public health crisis in which mis- and dis-information ran rampant. Micaela also shares her advocacy work within her community at the University of Houston, noting the interwoven nature of social work practice and advocacy for civil rights and liberation. This interview was conducted virtually by Murphy Anne Carter on June 15th, 2020.</p></text>

<text>Monique Joseph is the Holistic Services Director at Restoring Justice in Houston, TX. After her husband was wrongfully convicted, Monique began her journey working in reform and advocacy. The mistreatment her husband receives inside and the systemic racism that impacts Black children, specifically the school-to-prison pipeline– have inspired her calling to the restorative justice field. In this interview, Monique discusses the difficulties with suddenly becoming a single mother and navigating life without her husband. She describes how her mental and emotional state are continually impacted by her work and the trauma of her husband’s on-going incarceration. She talks about the importance of her support system– specifically her brother– and how her children have responded to their father’s incarceration. This interview was conducted by interviewer Julia Montiel via Zoom with narrator Monique Joseph.</text>
