Portrait drawing of Layfierre R. Mitchell by EJ Joyner. Layfierre Rodeiquez Mitchell, or “La La” as he was known by his loved ones, was a gentle giant, at 6-foot-4-inches tall. Layfierre died on April 17, at a hospital in Owensboro, Kentucky, nine days after being hospitalized and eight days after he tested positive for COVID-19. He was the second person to die of the virus in a Kentucky correctional facility. He passed away just eight days before his 50th birthday.
