This portrait drawing of Ricardo Williamson was created by Mourning Our Losses volunteer EJ Joyner to accompany Ricardo's memorial, which reads in part:<br /><br />"Ricardo Williamson loved to sing for his family. He enjoyed classics like Michael Jackson, The Temptations, and The O’Jays. “You had to hear him,” his niece Nina Kemp told NJ.com. “He had a nice little soft voice. A real smooth dude.” Ricardo, who had eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, was a “wonderful man,” his niece says. He spread joy, despite his health challenges; he suffered from at least three chronic medical conditions that required intensive medical treatment. Ricardo passed away at the age of 62 on Sunday, May 10, at the Central Reception and Assignment Facility in Trenton, New Jersey. While the facility declined to confirm the cause of death, citing medical privacy rules, New Jersey’s prisons had the highest COVID-19 death rate in the nation in May. The state’s prison system has been heavily criticized for its response to the pandemic and it initially took weeks to provide masks and hand sanitizer to incarcerated individuals."<br /><br /><a href="https://www.mourningourlosses.org/memorials/ricardo-williamson?rq=ricardo%20williamson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">To read the full memorial for Ricardo, please visit Mourning Our Losses.</a>

This portrait drawing of Susan Farrell was created by Mourning Our Losses volunteer EJ Joyner to accompany Susan's memorial, which reads in part:<br /><br />"Susan Farrell spent a large portion of her life and her last days in Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility in Ypsilanti, Michigan. On Wednesday April 8, 2020, she passed away at 74 years old. Susan is remembered by her laugh and being an endearing friend. An anonymous friend writes to the UCLA Covid Behind Bars Project, “She was one of my best friends during my 2 year stay. <span>Casey Phillips is the founder of the Texas Prisons Air Conditioning Advocacy group. In this follow-up to her 2020 interview, Casey discusses the conditions of her husband’s unit post-lockdown. Casey’s husband has late stage renal failure and continues to face worsening conditions in Texas Prisons. She discusses the procedures and emotions she experienced getting to visit her husband for the first time post-lockdown and what she thinks the future of visitations will look like. She also speaks about the process for parole approval and the contradictory nature of program enrollment becoming required after submitting for parole. Casey expresses disappointment and anger at the way incarcerated folks are disregarded by the state and general public, and hopes her efforts to fight for better conditions and rights are met with successful policy measures.</span>

<span>Jennifer Toon is a journalist, incarcerated rights advocate, and currently works as the Community Advocacy Manager at AVP. In a follow-up to her 2020 interview, Jennifer offers a personal perspective on how COVID-19 and Winter Storm Uri have affected the women incarcerated in Texas prisons. Jennifer speaks from her own experiences with the H1N1 pandemic inside Texas prisons, and the experiences she is hearing from her friends and loved ones who are still inside. Specifically, Jennifer speaks about the disparity between COVID-19 regulations and procedures when concerning the incarcerated women versus staff, visitors, and government officials. She states that the constant mistreatment and intimidation used by TDCJ and CO’s leads to a distrust for the government, which then impacts the women’s safety when it comes to vaccines and illness. Mostly, Jennifer is concerned for her loved ones still on the inside and their continued well being during COVID-19, vaccine rollouts, and Winter Storm Uri. Jennifer shares the story of CJ, a friend of hers who recently died of COVID-19 in the Mountainview Unit. Jennifer hopes that by sharing CJ’s story, policy regarding Texas prisons can change. This interview was conducted on March 9th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Jennifer Toon.</span>

Page Dukes shares a tribute for those still living during the Mourning Our Losses virtual vigil, "Marking a Year of Loss Behind Bars."<br /><br />The tribute reads:<br /><br />"Good mourning, comrades, siblings in arms- good arms that hold us up, not hold us down. Your arms that fold laundry and push carts and scrub baseboards and swing mops and all without pay, but come to rest on each other’s shoulders and slap cards on tables and embrace on the walk in defiance. You woke up this mourning in grace, whether in fear or calm, knowing the odds against you even before you read the daily numbers. Powerlessness over the PIC is not complete. There is power to be found even in the midst of suffering and neglect. We are responsible, not simply for our individual redemption, but for the redemption of this soul-sick nation. Once we are free, are we then really free? Can liberation really be dependent on bondage? We have been bound physically, now economically, now politically we must become activated. Only organization and education and solidarity and will empower us. May you be happy and joyful where you are May you be healthy in heart and in body May you know even now what it means, what it’s worth, how it feels to be Free." <br />

Alvin Sanderson is an activist who advocates for the rights of unhoused individuals in Austin, Texas. In his interview he describes his fight against Proposition B, a ballot initiative passed in Austin on May 1st, 2021. Proposition B made it a criminal offense to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas. Alvin discusses how houselessness perpetuates cycles of harm and violence, and criminalizing houseless folk will only make matters worse. Alvin specifically points out how Prop B has led to the death of many unhoused folks and also pushes people into the woods, where violence and sexual violence often occur. When unhoused folks are faced with paying fines and potential incarceration or hiding in unsafe areas, there is no safety net and no safe option. Alvin advocates specifically for houseless women as he fears they are more vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, but speaks generally about his compassion towards folks who are facing circumstances similar to those in his past. As a formerly unhoused and formerly incarcerated individual, Alvin deeply understands the trials that many unhoused people in Austin face, and hopes that folks with more privileged backgrounds can come to show compassion as well.

Marina Roberts is a public-school teacher, union member, and community organizer living and working in Austin, Texas. During her interview, Marina discusses her work advocating for housing rights in Austin, Texas, specifically her campaign work to decriminalize houselessness in 2019, and her recent work fighting Proposition B, a ballot initiative passed in Austin on May 1st, 2021. Proposition B reinstated the camping ban that was repealed in 2019, making it a criminal offense to sit, lie down, or camp in public areas. This interview was conducted on June 23, 2021, in Garrison Hall on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin.

Description
An account of the resource
At the time of this interview, Amite Dominick was the Vice-President of the Texas Prisons Air-Conditioning Advocates, and a former board member of Texas Cure. In July of 2021, Dominick became the president of TPAA, and the organization changed its name to the Texas Prisons Community Advocates. She has been advocating for the installation of air-conditioning in all Texas prisons since 2015. Detailing her experiences at the Texas legislature, Dominick dives into the realities of criminal justice advocacy and how conditions of confinement intersect with every other aspect of carceral life. Dominick’s work is one of ongoing effort, and she explains the exhaustion, the frustration, and the sacrifice of trying to change the laws creating fatal circumstances for so many, who physically cannot demand more from their state representatives. This interview was conducted by Murphy Anne Carter as part of the Sheltering Justice interview collection by Texas After Violence Project. Carter and Dominick spoke on June 1st, 2021 via Zoom.
