<span>Jennifer Toon is a journalist, incarcerated rights advocate, and currently works as the Community Advocacy Manager at AVP. In a follow-up to her 2020 interview, Jennifer offers a personal perspective on how COVID-19 and Winter Storm Uri have affected the women incarcerated in Texas prisons. Jennifer speaks from her own experiences with the H1N1 pandemic inside Texas prisons, and the experiences she is hearing from her friends and loved ones who are still inside. Specifically, Jennifer speaks about the disparity between COVID-19 regulations and procedures when concerning the incarcerated women versus staff, visitors, and government officials. She states that the constant mistreatment and intimidation used by TDCJ and CO’s leads to a distrust for the government, which then impacts the women’s safety when it comes to vaccines and illness. Mostly, Jennifer is concerned for her loved ones still on the inside and their continued well being during COVID-19, vaccine rollouts, and Winter Storm Uri. Jennifer shares the story of CJ, a friend of hers who recently died of COVID-19 in the Mountainview Unit. Jennifer hopes that by sharing CJ’s story, policy regarding Texas prisons can change. This interview was conducted on March 9th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Jennifer Toon.</span>

At the time of this interview, João Paulo (JP) Connolly was the Organizing Director of the Austin Justice Coalition. In this role JP has helped the greater Ausftin community to fight against extreme policing and police violence, housing and displacement— specfically against Prop B— and cretaing a safer community for all. JP believes that we can and should reiamgine our communities as inclusive and sacred spaces where neighbors support each other and housing is a right, not a siginifer of wealth. Additionally, he emphasizes the importance of community organizing and community building and seeks a future where communities are the foundation fro people’s safety and well-being, not government entities and white hegemonic political structure. In this interview, JP discusses the reprecussions of the passing of Prop B and how rapid gentrification in Austin is leading to community displacement— specifically impacting Austin’s communities of color and historic black neighborhoods. JP speaks about AJC’s start working with BLM protests to work against police brutality, and how they have shifted to also focus on Austin’s housing crisis and insufficient resources for mental health and addiction. Although the work is hard and often discouraging, JP maintains hope that a better future can await us if we start relying on each other.

Jorge Antonio Renaud is a writer, poet, and activist. In this interview, he discusses the intersections of abolition, incarceral justice activism, COVID-19, police brutality, and immigration policies. Through this discussion, it is clear that all of these things impact one another and were built to boost white supremacy. Jorge speaks about how activism has changed since he began after his release from incarceration decades ago and how language around incarceration has also progressed. Specifically, he discusses how incarceration breeds violence and cycles of harm and injustice, and how the idea of "innocence" harms people currently incarcerated. Jorge muses on what the abolition movement and justice movement will look like in the future and hopes that people will continue to physically do the work that needs to be done. This interview was conducted via Zoom on November 6, 2020 with interviewer Gabriel Solis and narrator Jorge Antonio Renaud.

<span>Kambri Crews was raised in rural Texas by deaf parents with few resources. Crew's book, </span><em>Burn Down The Ground: A Memoir</em><span>, reflects on the experience of living with disabled parents who carry their own traumas. In telling her own story, she also explores the past of her alcoholic and abusive father who eventually ended up in a Texas prison for the attempted murder of his partner. Here, Crews talks to TAVP about what has happened in the 8 years since her book was published. She also speaks upon the fear of police within the deaf community due to deaf/hearing misunderstandings that often lead to brutality at the hands of the police.She reflects on her father's experience as a deaf man in a prison system that is unable or unwilling to accommodate him– despite a ravaging pandemic and continuing health problems. She talks specifically about his struggles with health while inside, including his reluctance to seek any medical treatment because of a distrust for the prison medical system. In July 2020, Crews's father passed away from terminal cancer.</span>

Kambri Crews is an author, comedian, and incarcerated rights advocate from East Texas. In this follow-up to her 2020 interview, Kambri discusses her father’s death in incarceration in 2020 and her battle with TDCJ. Kambri’s father passed shortly after her 2020 interview after being diagnosed with inoperable stage 4 lung cancer. Kambri spent the better part of 2020 and the years prior unabatingly requesting TDCJ to take better care of her father’s ailing health. Kambri’s community rallied around her when TDCJ would not release her father’s dental records, with enough pressure, TDCJ finally succumbed to her request. Kambri discusses the bureaucratic obstacles that prevent loved ones from accessing medical records and requesting medical help for those on the inside. Her father suffered from severe dental decay and severe health problems, in addition to being deaf, and was neglected at every level of the carceral system. Kambri hopes that by sharing her experience, she is able to continue to help and advocate for other families experiencing similar circumstances. This interview was recorded via Zoom on June 29th, 2021 with interviewer Bryn Starbird and narrator Kambri Crews.

Karen Munoz is the co-founder of Mano Amiga, a Central Texas organization that focuses on immigration and incarceration rights and reform. In this interview, Karen discusses the importance of organizing at a community level and the impact of municipal government. As the co-founder of Mano Amiga, Karen noticed a lack of resources for immigrants along the I-35 corridor, specifically the lack of an immigration rights attorney. She created Mano Amiga in hopes of providing the resources., framework, and tools for individuals vulnerable to injustice at the hands of the state. Her framework is rooted in abolition as she seeks to provide tools for folks targeted by mass incarceration and ICE through racist and classist systems. Karen began in this work through violence prevention work at a domestic violence organization. She has worked for organizations such as Latino Justice and Just Futures Law. Currently, Karen is pursuing a law degree to continue her work in immigration rights and defense. Kimberly Judd’s husband of 18 years is currently incarcerated in the Texas Prison system. In this interview, Kimberly describes the inhumane conditions incarcerated people are subjected to under the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Specifically, Kimberly speaks about her husband’s experience with starvation and unsafe living conditions in 2020, during the Covid-19 lockdown, in the Garza East and West Units and the Ferguson Unit. Kimberly recounts the abuse in every unit her husband has stayed in and discusses the gross abuses of power by guards, wardens, and the Texas government. She discusses the community she has found within the TDCJ unit support groups and how information sharing has increased her awareness of the injustice on the inside. This interview was conducted on July 6, 2020 on Zoom by interviewer Celeste Henery and narrator Kimberly Judd.

Description
An account of the resource
Kirsten Ricketts is an incarcerated rights advocate with a loved one on the inside. As a formerly incarcerated person herself, she deeply understands the abuse and injustices that incarcerated people face on the inside and in the free world. Using her previous experience, Kirsten created a transitional living facility for recently freed women where she helps them gain job experience all the while providing a safe space for them to re-enter society. In this interview, Kirsten speaks on her own personal calling to continue to advocate for just treatment inside Texas prisons, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Additionally, she speaks about her husband’s and her own experience in Texas prisons and the challenges she has faced with recidivism and the struggle to re-enter society. Kirsten finds hope in her Christian faith and working in prison ministries and urges free people to know and understand the injustices that incarcerated people face everyday. This interview was conducted on July 16, 2020 by interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Kirsten Ricketts.

<span>Kirsten Ricketts is an incarcerated rights and re-entry advocate with a loved one on the inside. In this follow up to her 2020 interview, Kirsten speaks about the impacts of 2021 winter Storm Uri in Texas prisons. Specifically, she speaks about the living conditions that her husband and hundreds of others faced in wake of the storm. Kirsten also speaks on the introduction of House Bill 2793. If this bill were to pass, it would require that the parole panel provide actions that one can take if denied parole in order to be approved. Additionally, this bill calls for an individual programming and needs/risk assessment to be completed at 45 days after incarceration, instead of 120. Kirsten advocates for restorative justice, as she feels the mental, physical, and educational needs of incarcerated folk are not met, thus making it difficult to re-enter the free world. Kirsten also shares that folks at the Darrington Unit were able to get vaccinated due to an electric outage, and hopes people at other units can have the option to be vaccinated soon.
