Dear Sheltering Justice,
Hello my name is William Rex Beckam but everyone calls me Skittles. I’m an inmate on the price Daniel unit in the Texas Prison system. Today Warden number 02 and captain Hoover came in J1-building, C-wing and racked everyone up in there cells. When I asked why? Warden 02 said it’s A Precautionary lockdown until they get A inmates covid-19 test results back. When they racked everyone up 2 other inmates came forward saying that they were also sick. When they went to medial there tempatures were taken and both inmates had a fever. So medical sat them A room that was A/C until there tempature went down, then re-took there tempatures said they were fine and sent them right back to the wing. They didn’t do no Covid-19 testing and medical hasn’t been coming in here at all or taking anyone’s tempatures yet there are many people sick. Price Daniel unit is trying to sweep the sickness under the rug, All so they can look good and save money on testing. I don’t know if they even have the tests to do it or maybe their hands tied by those above them, I don’t know. I do know that it makes for A very unhealthy situation for all those here at this unit. Talk about one of the most uncaring acts I’ve seen in my 5 1/2 years of being incarcerated. I made parole on April 2nd and have been in changes 3 class since April 13th, which has to be finished before I can leave says my FI3R. Yet we have been getting packets in order to do so, well my teacher Ms. Greene has already messed up on my packets and now in order to fix it I was giving two Module 7 packets on 6-22-2020 which I finished. But when I went to school on 6-29-2020 Ms. Greene was suppost to take packet module 7 then take me to do my Resume for the module. But because she didn’t feel like it and plainly dont care she gave em back module 7 plus my two last packets of module 1 and said next week bring it back and ms. Campbell will help you do your Resume and collect your finished work. So because Ms. Greene put her job off

Ms. Campbell and I didn’t get to do my Resume and now we are on A precautionary lockdown I wont be able to leave my cell to do my Resume which should have been done already. I might not get to finish my changes 3 class for parole for who knows how long. Then with the prison not doing tests or tempature checks and by sending inmates back to there cells and trying not to act as if there not sick it could spread. The inmates who went to medical that are sick live in cells 212 and 213 and I’m next door in cell 214. I say that to let you know we share vents and breath the same air. Everything could lead upto me catching Covid-19 because of the very careless actions of those in charge. And because I can’t finish my class so I can get out and because medical and staff arent doing there jobs right. Its only going to get worse. How uncaring to me and my family on the outside, and to all the other inmates here on the price Daniel unit. This is what we are experiencing inside these walls while being incarcerated during the covid-19 pandemic. Uncaring people inside.

Description
An account of the resource
Tandera Louie is a community organizer and preschool teacher in East Austin. In this interview, Tandera speaks about the unequal treatment of houseless folks in Austin as well as the wealth and resource gap that continues to grow due to capital investors and capital-produced gentrification. As a community organizer with Austin DSA, she often helps with canvassing initiatives. Although she finds canvassing essential work, she often faces anxiety and fear as a black woman approaching the homes of strangers in a highly segregated city. Tandera speaks about her personal abolition beliefs and reimagined versions of society sans state violence and surveillance. As she continues to fight for a just and caring community, she makes sure she has time to spend in nature as well as indulge in what brings her joy. This interview was recorded via Zoom on August 9, 2021 with interviewer Murphy Anne Carter and narrator Tandera Louie.

Sean Oliver, a mentor and religious leader, was released on parole during 2020. In this interview, Sean speaks about the difficulties coping with COVID-19 while incarcerated, specifically the contradicting stipulations that were placed upon the men seeking parole and the COVID-19 policies that denied them the classes necessary to achieve parole. Sean became a mentor and religious leader while still inside and finds that it is his life’s purpose to share his story and how his relationship with God has changed him. An account of the resource
Savannah Eldrige is the founder of Be Frank 4 Justice, an organization that seeks to maintain family bonds, create positive outcomes, and advocate for incarcerated rights. Eldrige is also a co-founder of Coalition to Abolish Slavery-Texas (CAST) which is a partner of the Abolish Slavery National Network (ASNN). Both CAST and ASNN seek to abolish any legal premise of slavery that exists in national and state constitutions. Savannah is continually impacted by the carceral system, as both her brothers and her step-son are all incarcerated; she felt called to post-conviction work after the arrest and conviction of her brother, Frank. She began advocating for those on the inside who are often ignored by the media and the policy makers. In this interview, Savannah discusses the difficulties incarcerated folks have trying to re-enter the free world and the continual harm that the system perpetuates. Savannah also discusses the murder of George Floyd and how systemic racism impacts the black community and the continued racial disparity seen in US prisons. She highlights the importance of continuing to love, support, and care for loved ones on the inside because with that support and love, justice is possible. This interview was conducted on August 19th, 2020 via Zoom by interviewer Celeste Henery and narrator Savannah Eldrige.
