            Description
Alycia Welch is the Associate Director of the Prison and Jails Innovation Lab at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT Austin. In this interview, Alycia speaks about her work to dismantle the gender gap behind bars. Alycia works to create policy and reform for women in Texas prisons because their needs are often ignored and neglected by TDCJ and the state. Alycia speaks about the types of reform she is hoping to see in Texas prisons, revolving around women’s access to their children, improvements to education/programs, leadership changes, and environmental changes. Alycia also speaks to the societal conditions that often push women into state violence and the carceral system, and ultimately, the hardship women face because of their gender. This interview was conducted on May 13th, 2021 via Zoom by interviewer Bryn Starbird and narrator Alycia Welch.
